A new show about American rock singer Tina Turner is currently delighting audiences on its West End Run. Tina Turner the Musical is the result of many years of hard work bringing the story to the stage. However the star herself was initially reluctant to meet the team behind the new show. Turner said that she was “too busy enjoying her retirement” to get involved in a new project. After the producers flew to Switzerland to meet her however, the Simply the Best singer had a dramatic change of heart and Turner now describes herself as ‘thrilled’ and excited by the end result.
The musical, which opened on the 17th April 2018 at the Aldwych Theatre, follows Turner from her earliest days in Nutbush, Tennessee, right up to her time as a multi million selling, internationally acclaimed artist. The show’s producers have delivered an honest retelling of the Turner story, and one that is not afraid of tackling the thornier subjects like domestic abuse.
The young star of the production, Adrienne Warren, has described the show as inspirational. The Virginia born actress says “She’s a motivation and an inspiration to all women, and especially women of colour”. Warren adds that she would not have become a performer if it wasn’t for Turner. “It’s the first time I ever realised that I could grow up in the South and have dreams that would take me all over the world” she says.
The show is produced by award winning director Phyllida Lloyd who previously brought the ABBA musical Mama Mia to the stage and screen.
Tina Turner the Musical is at the Aldwych from the 28th of July 2021 until the 18th of December 2022. More information about the show can be found here.
