“Little Venice is the prettiest and most romantic spot in town” boasts the London Walks website, and after two hours of postcard pretty scenery, it’s hard to disagree.
The area is an inviting mix of pretty white stucco houses, charming green spaces and proud waterways, while also boasting some of the finest early Victorian domestic architecture in the country – the majority of which guide Shaughan points out along the way.
Little Venice is also home to an impressive list of famous residents, both living and dead, with Freud, Browning, Edward Fox, David Ben-Gurion and Annie Lennox at one time or other residing in the area.
The real star of the show, however, is Shaughan. Charming and quick witted, the Londoner holds the internationally recognised Blue Badge guiding qualification and is also a distinguished actor with a list of TV credits including the likes of Poirot & Casualty. Shaughan keeps us amused throughout the tour, with a seemingly neverending list of hilarious stories, many of which feature the guide’s impressive range of comical voices. It’s a remarkable slice of one man theatre and a bargain for ten pounds (now £15).
The Little Venice Walking Tour takes place on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays throughout the year. Please note that the tour will not take place on the 19th and 26th of January and the 2nd, 9th, 16th and 23rd of February 2022. Information about the tour can be found here.
