If you’re researching nights out in London, then you could do a lot worse than the Silent Disco at the View from the Shard. Silent discos are where it’s at right now with numerous gigs popping up in London – even the Science Museum got in on the act recently.
The idea is a simple one. Instead of using massive speakers, the music is pumped through wifi connected headphones to individual clubbers. Revellers have a number of music channels to choose from and they can switch between channels as often as they wish.
I wonder who came up with the idea first? Some sad, sleep deprived individual living next to a nightclub, is my guess. Simply convince the club’s owners that pumping music through headphones was the way forward and eureka! No more sleepless nights. Problem solved!
Despite what it says on the tin, however, silent discos are actually anything but silent. There is no loud, thumping music – the headphones take care of that – but if you thought that no music equals quiet, then you’d better think again. As it turns out, silent disco goers absolutely love a sing-song.
Well, who could blame them? Think about it – your favourite tune is playing and everyone else is wearing headphones – you couldn’t ask for a better opportunity to indulge in a spot of no risk karaoke.
The silent disco movement has been growing in recent years, with venues that have traditionally been unable to host a old school club night eagerly jumping on the silent disco band wagon.
The event to beat all other nights out in London however is definitely Time Out’s Silent Disco at the View from the Shard. That’s right, Western Europe’s tallest building has also been getting in on the action with revellers able to strut their funky stuff while taking in some of the most breathtaking views in the city.
The event is certainly not cheap at £37.50 a ticket, but for that money you do get a truly unique experience as well as a fantastic story to impress your workmates on a Monday morning.
The blurb on the website advises visitors to “pick your channel and choose your side as three DJs battle it out over separate wireless channels playing the best in pop, rock and party classics, whilst you admire the sweeping panoramas of London at your feet!”. Hmm, sounds like fun.
