This may be the toughest half marathon of all. The Virgin Sport Half Marathon sets competitors a tough challenge – complete a 13.1 mile run thorough hipster Hackney, without making a single detour to one of the areas’ tempting brunch places. It seems like a tall order but hey, if someone’s got to do it, thank f**k it’s not us.
The Virgin Sport Half Marathon
Seriously though, this event sounds cool. The website for the half marathon promises “live bands and DJs at every mile” so who knows, we might even see runners busting a few moves as they approach the finishing line.
The organisers have picked a really scenic route for the event. Runners will see Hackney’s wonderfully art deco Town Hall, breeze through food lover’s paradise, Broadway Market, admire the street art around Hackney Wick and finish with dazzling views of the Olympic Park.
The competitor’s swag is not half bad too. Some organisers feel content to give participants a couple of bananas and a bottle of water but not Virgin. No, this is a proper goodie bag. So here you get an exclusive T-shirt by ASICS, a medal, a tote bag, goodies from Virgin’s partners and free race photos. Nice.
Virgin Sport Festival of Fitness
Virgin have coupled the marathon with a ‘festival of fitness’. They have called the event Virgin Sport Hackney and designed it to give visitors the opportunity to try as many types of fitness activity and class as they could possibly imagine.
Some of London’s best instructors will be on hand to help participants with the activities but if you’d really rather just relax, then you can, at one of the many spectator zones.
Then, once you have worked up an appetite exercising (or even if you couldn’t be bothered) you’ll be able to indulge yourself in a few edible goodies with festival organisers promising a range of food and drink from local producers along with entertainment.
The Run Hackney Virgin Sport Half Marathon will take place on Sunday the 19th of May 2019.
