Nitto ATP Finals, The O2 Arena

The Nitto ATP Finals are the thrilling climax to the international tennis season with one last opportunity to see the best tennis players in the world do battle. Peter Gray reports.

The Nitto ATP Finals represents the grande finale of the international tennis season and one of London’s top sporting events. The event, which brings the cream of the world’s players together for one thrilling climatic battle, will this year once again be staged at the o2 Arena.

The annual event, which is now in its 49th year, features the world’s best eight qualified singles players and doubles teams only in a round-robin format with the best four players and doubles teams progressing to the knockout stages.

All of the matches are contested over three sets with the doubles matches contested over two sets and a tie break. The players are seeded before the tournament begins depending on their final standings in the ATP work rankings.

Since the tournament began in 1970, the competition has moved several times with the contest scheduled to be played in London until 2020. This represents a real coup for Londoners who will be able to see some of the greatest players in world tennis at one of london’s top sporting events.

Last year’s competition gave the tennis season a suitably thrilling climax with rising star Grigor Dimitrov’s beating Belgium’s David Goffin  7-5, 4-6, 6-3 in the final.

Bulgarian Dimitrov, for so long viewed as one of the next big things in international tennis, announced his arrival at the top table with the win after claiming his first tour title earlier in the year in Brisbane. He followed that up with the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 trophy in Cincinnati and if the world still wasn’t taking enough notice, he made his intentions crystal clear at the o2.

Since then the 26 year old Bulgarian has lost in the quarter finals of the 2018 Australian open as well as losing to Roger Federer in the final of the ABN Amro trophy in Rotterdam.

The 2019 Nitto ATP Finals will be held at The O2 in London from the 10th to the 17th of November.
