Hampstead Village and Heath

Discover Hampstead Village with London Walks. Peter Gray reports.

If I live a good, moral life (well, I can always start now!), I do not want to go to heaven – I’d much rather go to Hampstead. In reality however, with property prices being what they are, the Hampstead Village and Heath Walking Tour by the London Walks company is probably about as close as I am going to get – dead or alive. However, if you fancy a taste of how the other half live – then this is the walk for you.

The delightful and very welcoming David is the perfect host and for two hours, Hampstead is your oyster. If you are not lucky enough to already know the man, David is one of London Walks’ premier guides – a historian, university lecturer, journalist, and committed anglophile. The Blue Badge guide hails from the US of A, but so passionate is he about his adopted city, that he didn’t only set up home here, he actually bought the London Walks company itself!

If you’ve never been to Hampstead, then you are in for a treat. It is one of London’s most attractive villages. A delightful mix of urban and rural, with stunning architecture, perfectly preserved Georgian townhouses, a multitude of pretty walks and a 900-acre heath right on the doorstep.

This walk is the perfect way to see it too. David squeezes every last detail out of the place – every historic building, every blue plaque, every famous resident and interesting story. It’s all captured on not to be missed tour. It’s so good that you’ll feel like a local once the tour has ended!

If you are thinking of going on the tour, please check the London Walks website to make sure the walk is taking place on that day.
