The Murder Express

Rail travel can be murder. Literally, in this case. Peter Gray reports.

The London skyline at night

Travelling by train can be murder these days, what with the regular delays and seemingly endless stoppages – so, at least the passengers on this particular journey get to have a bit of fun, too. Theatre group Funicular are the people behind this imaginative adventure and they have gone all our to ensure that the event is choc-a-bloc full of thrills, chills and intrigue.

The departure point for the ominously named “Murdér Express” is the fictitious Pedley Street Station. The action begins in the Station’s ‘Seven Sins’ Bar, where the passengers enjoy a final drink before boarding their train. They are not alone, however, as they are soon joined by a sinister collection of characters including Frank, the East End Costermonger, Tilley, the music hall star and Vera, a widow in search of adventure.

For 2022, the company behind the event, Funicular Productions, have debuted a new story, called The Jewel of the Empire. The blurb for the event says: “the year is 1937, the height of the British Empire, and Britain’s most famous archeologist, Dr. Errol Earhart, has unearthed the world’s most valuable diamond, the Jewel of the Empire, which is being transported to the Von Cleethorpes estate via Pedley Street station’s, Murdér Express.”

This is the cue for another engaging, thrilling and completely immersive adventure from the Funicular team, where the attention to detail of the sets is matched by the skill and energy of the performers.

There’s food, too, with dishes like celeriac and truffle soup, sage gnocchi, black garlic & braised onions and buttermilk panna cotta with raspberry puffed wild rice. However, the star of the show is the story and this should keep guests guessing right up until the end of the night.
