What did people actually do for amusement before rooftop bars became fashionable? You may well ask, such is our current mania for roof based hangouts. It seems that every couple of weeks a new rooftop bar venue opens somewhere in London and the trend seems to accelerate in summer with a spate of such venues, some admittedly rather low key, while others, like this one, seem intent on doing things on a much larger scale.
The venue has a lot going for it, for one thing. The Skylight bar is set over three levels with the club sitting on the site of a former multi storey car park. Secondly, the rooftop bar offers some absolutely breath-taking views of London. On a clear day you should be able to take in The Swiss Re: Building (the Gherkin), The Shard and The Walkie Talkie.
This season’s theme is ‘Lawn Club’ hence visitors can participate in croquet and Pétanque (a kind of bowls). There are also large screen TVs to watch the sport and a variety of themed foods and drinks. There are also DJ collectives including Gold Teeth and Coastal Haze, a Sanpellegrino pop-up Fruit Cart as well as a variety of street foods. Hell, there’s even an ice rink although this will open later in the year.
Food is provided by burger joint We Serve Humans, Yiro, who will be serving up a selection of souvlaki, and Thai food producer Kra Pow, who will be serving up their signature pad kra pow, an absolutely gorgeous mix of minced meat and fried egg.
Entrance to Skylight is free but you have to pay to play the various games on offer.
