This festive show, adapted from the much loved series of films of the same name, is as sweet, warm and welcome as the season it heralds.
The Nativity movies were delightfully festive and feel good and Debbie Isitt, who directed the original series and has written this adaptation, is clearly sticking with the winning formula for this musical version of the tale.
The story follows under achieving St Bernadette’s primary teacher Paul Madden as he struggles to put on a Nativity play to rival that of nearby private school, Oakmoor. The news that the Oakmoor production is to be produced by Madden’s old drama school rival Gordon Shakespeare, only spurs the frustrated Madden on.
Matters get a great deal more complicated when word spreads that the St Bernadette’s production is to be turned into a Hollywood movie. This proves to be a lie – in a moment of weakness Madden invents the story to impress Shakespeare – however the rumour quickly spreads and soon the whole school is talking about it.
Nativity the Musical was a smash hit on its debut in 2017 and this tour follows on from that success with the new run set to begin in Coventry before coming to London for Christmas.
The show is greatly aided by an insanely catchy soundtrack which features many of the hits from the film including Sparkle and Shine, Nazareth, One Night One Moment and She’s the Brightest Star. To this has been added several new songs.
This new run will also benefit from a number of high profile celebrity guest appearances including EastEnder Jake Wood for the Oxford shows, Charlie Brooks for the Nottingham run and hard man Danny Dyer for the West End performances. All three will play the Hollywood Producer character. In addition, the role of “the critic” will be played by comedian Jo Brand in both Edinburgh and London.
Nativity the Musical will run from the 19th December to the 31st of December 2018 at the Eventim Apollo.
