Hamilton – the Musical

Since its transfer to the West End, Hamilton the Musical has delighted audiences and critics in equal measure. Peter Gray reports.

What can we say about Hamilton the Musical that hasn’t been said a thousand times before? The show has become a phenomenon, first in the United States and now overseas, as the West End version of the musical continues to play to packed, appreciative audiences every night.

What has made the show so special is it’s uniquely distinctive treatment of American history – in this case the life of American founding father Alexander Hamilton.

The musical employs an intoxicating mash up of hip hop and show tunes to breath new life into what might in other hands have been a staid retelling of the story.

The music is very much the key here. The soundtrack album has already sold over a million copies in the US alone with such industry luminaries as Questlove and Black Thought of the Roots heavily involved. This attention to detail has paid off and the music in the show is incredible and justifies the price of admission to see the show by itself. Indeed the album has been acclaimed that the Hamilton soundtrack was Billboard’s Best Rap Album of 2016.

However Hamilton the Musical is so much more than its incredible soundtrack album. One of the main explanations for the show’s huge popularity is its incredible contemporary  relevance.

Writer Lin Manuel Miranda’s story addresses immigration, racial diversity and bigotry. At one point one of the characters says “immigrants, we get the job done” and the line draws a great cheer from the audience every night.

Hamilton is at the Victoria Palace Theatre from the 19th of August 2021. More information about Hamilton the Musical can be found here.
