There is something so classy about Regent Street. Whether it be the architecture, the proximity to Saville Row, or the high end retailers clamouring to join the neighbourhood, Regent Street has always had that something special.
Not that the street is at all elite. Regent Street in the 21st century is as much a home to the likes of H&M and Zara as it is to Burberry and Michael Kors. Nonetheless, the street possesses an unmistakeable magic that Oxford Street and the rest could never hope to match.
If this is true during the year, then it is doubly true at Christmas when London’s streets are suddenly lit up by the glare of a thousand lights. Where Oxford Street throws the sink at it, Covent Garden resorts to supersizing everything, Regent Street’s Christmas decorations are a predictably classy and understated affair.
In the last few years these decorations have focused on angels. “The Spirit of Christmas” is a homage to the street’s very first Christmas lighting arrangement, which depicted angels positioned as if playing instruments. The reimagined scheme was created by James Glancy Design Ltd. It incorporates sixteen monumental angels dressed in synchronised LED pea lights. The effect is quite breathtaking and the illuminations have continually attracted praise and critical acclaim.
Glancy’s angels will be returning to Regent Street on the 12th of November 2021 with the event set to include the usual round of special events in stores, music and celebrity guests.
Few details about the big switch on have yet been released but if previous years are anything to go by, the event should begin at around 4pm and end at approximately 9pm with the whole street declared traffic free for the duration of the evening. The switch on itself normally takes place between 5.30pm and 6.30pm and the area is expected to be extremely busy at this time so do arrive early.
The Regent Street website is promising a “fun and festive evening” and an array of surprise acts. Previous events have attracted celebrities such as Paloma Faith and the band Clean Bandit.
The Regent Street Christmas Lights Switch On will happen on the 12th of November 2021. More information about the event can be found here.
