***This article describes the 2019 Christmas in Leicester Square event. We are still awaiting details of this year’s event***
A word of warning – if you hate Christmas, then November & December are going to seem particularly long, as the city fills to bursting with festive cheer. There are ice skating rinks popping up all over town, a slew of Christmas theatre and pantomime shows to enjoy, decorations on every street corner and a German Christmas market on every available bit of land. Yep, Londoners love Christmas and this year we’re determined to do it style.
One of the most popular festive attractions in the last years has been the Christmas Festival in Leicester Square. Always an entertainment hub, the Square is now home to a spectacular festival that mixes traditional entertainment (from the Udderbelly team) with the usual mix of food stalls, food and drink and a Christmas Grotto.
The Burlesque concert introduces the House of Burlesque who present a Christmas Carol Concert of the “fabulous, fierce and festive”. Visitors are invited to “raise your voices and your glasses as Tempest Rose and the stars of the UK’s top burlesque production house raise hem-lines and pulses”. The organisers of the event promise alternative Christmas songs, pop up performances and traditional carol concert trimmings. As an additional bonus, you get to wear your Christmas jumper.
The Udderbelly team are promising a festive bonanza including a Burlesque Christmas Carol Concert, a Shakespeare inspired event called Shakespearience and a Christmas Disco for toddlers (Monski Mouse’s Christmas Baby Disco).
Shakespearience sees The Shakespeare’s Men romp through such classics of English literature as Macbeth, Romeo & Juliet and Twelfth Night. It’s all done with a mischievous wit, lots of audience interaction and “a dash of mayhem”.
The Disco offers parents and toddlers an opportunity to party together as Australian DJ Monski Mouse spins the tunes as her troop of dancers encourage the little ones to bust a move or two.
Christmas in Leicester Square will open on the 12th of November 2021. More information about the event can be found here.
