Hot on the heels of the announcement of her new stand up special for online streaming giant Netflix, Wanda Sykes will be coming to London for a special one-off gig at Islington’s Union Chapel. The show will take place on the 11th of January 2019 and will be one of a number of European shows by the American performer.
Sykes is best known for her role on Curb Your Enthusiasm. The show follows semi-retired television writer and producer Larry David as he battles the annoyances of everyday life as well as his own foibles.
Sykes plays a fictionalised version of herself on the show, which has become a massive hit in the states. Curb Your Enthusiasm made its US debut in June 2000 and since then the programme has garnered a plethora of Emmys and Golden Globes.
The actress is also a talented comedy writer who has written for a variety of TV programmes including The Chris Rock Show. Sykes won an Emmy Award in 1999 for her work on the show. The comedian has also had roles on The New Adventures of Old Christine and in films such as Monster-in-Law, My Super Ex-Girlfriend and Evan Almighty. In 2004 the comedian was named one of the 25 funniest people in America by US magazine Entertainment Weekly.
Sykes’ stand up career began at a Coors Light Super talent Showcase in Washington, DC and since then the comedian has performed at a variety of prestigious events as well as recording several stand up specials for the likes of HBO and CBS.
In 2012 Sykes created Push It Productions with veteran producer Page Hurwitz. The company aims to produce quality comedy programmming for network and cable broadcasters.
Wanda Sykes at the Union Chapel will take place on Friday 11th January 2019.
