This article describes the 2019 event. Details of the 2021 Kew Gardens Orchid Festival will appear here shortly.

The plant life of Costa Rica provides the inspiration for Kew Gardens’ 24th annual Orchid Festival as the botanical garden’s tropical greenhouse comes alive with some of the colourful species native to the South American country.

The Prince of Wales Conservatory will play host to the plants with highlights including the ‘Carnival of Animals’ display which will cleverly depict a variety of species including a toucan, a sloth and an array of swimming turtles using hundreds of orchids.

Columbia’s native river Caño Cristalesm will be represented by a variety of hanging vandas while a forest scene populated with life size jaguars will be cleverly fashioned out of the orchids.

The fabulous legend of El Dorado will be referenced with a floating display of yellow orchids in the glasshouse pond.

Columbia’s love affair with the butterfly will be celebrated with a vibrant display of the winged creatures, suspended from the glasshouse ceiling.
Kew has collaborated with Columbian artist Vanessa Monkey Gonzaìlez to create an intimate Bogota inspired cafe from the West London’s venue’s Glasshouse Film Room. The cafe will be open for those who want to grab a drink and peruse the cafe’s murals.

Columbia is famed for its biodiversity with the south American country home to more species of birds than anywhere else in the world. The festival will highlight Kew’s work with the Columbian government to “identify, protect and promote” the country’s biodiversity. A team from Kew are engaged on research in Columbia to help uncover new species of plants, encourage conservation and promote sustainability.

The Orchids Festival will be accompanied by an ambitious cultural programme which will present the art, music, dance and cuisine of the nation.

The Kew Gardens Orchid Festival 2021 has been postponed. The festival will return in 2022. If you would like more information, please click here.
