The V&A is currently putting the final touches to a blockbuster new exhibition on the fashion design Christian Dior. Christian Dior – Designer of Dreams will open at the museum on the 2nd of February 2019 with a series of events and discussions planned to coincide with the show.
The exhibition will chart the period between 1947 and the present day, depicting the designer’s rise to fame and growing influence on the fashion world.
The show will pay special attention to the Dior’s special relationship with Great Britain, where the designer spent a great deal of his time. Indeed, one of the designer’s most notable quotes was inspired by his love of all things British.
“There is no other country in the world, besides my own, whose way of life I like so much. I love English traditions, English politeness, English architecture. I even love English cooking” Dior said, when asked about his feelings for the nation.
The exhibition is said to be the most comprehensive yet on the House of Dior with the V&A team taking inspiration from the recent Dior exhibition at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. Indeed, a large number of the exhibits in the new exhibition will be drawn from the French show. However, the curators of the V&A show are promising that at least 50% of the exhibits in their show will be new content.
The V&A textiles curator Oriole Cullen said of the new show “It’s quite phenomenal to think that every single garment in the show is handmade. Throughout the 70 years of the house, we see the high points and the amazing imagination of the designers at the helm. The garments themselves speak volumes, so this is very much a show that focuses on the fashion.”
The show is split into sections with one section devoted to “The New Look” and another to “The Dior Line”. Another section will take a look at Dior’s fascination with Britain. As a young man of 21 visiting Britain for the first time, the Normandy born Frenchman quickly fell in love with the country, developing a particular fascination with British architecture, food and clothing.
As his success grew, Dior became a friend of the British upper classes and at the height of his fame he was counting the royal family as some of his most valued customers. Princess Margaret was a particular fan of the brand wearing one Dior creation at her 21st birthday party.
Christian Dior: Designer of Dreams will run from the 2nd of February until the 1st of September 2019 at the V&A. Tickets are on sale now.
