Now, this is an intriguing pairing. Shoe king Manolo Blahnik has teamed up with London’s The Wallace Collection for a new exhibition exploring both the shoe designer’s genius as well as the incredible gems at the historic house.
The collection features a selection of shoes personally selected by the designer himself mingled with items from the Wallace in the aim of showing the artistic links between a 21st century design icon and the world of high art in the 18th & 19th century.
A different theme from Blahnik’s work is explored in each room of the exhibition, with the influence of the Commedia dell’arte, his native Spain, Rococo style and the cult of Englishness all mined for links to the Blahnik’s greatest works.
The shoe designer’s wares are a staple in the collection of so many of the world’s famous women with such luminaries as Beyoncé, Michelle Obama, Rihanna, Anna Wintour and Sarah Jessica Parker all proclaiming a love of the Blahnik’s shoes.
Blahnik has said of the collaboration with the museum: “’The Wallace Collection has been a point of reference for me since my early days in London. It was – and remains – one of my favourite museums with the most refined selection of art. I am incredibly humbled and honoured to be a part of the project and have my work displayed at the museum.”.
The exhibits on display will apparently include examples of the stunning shoes that the designer created after being inspired by the pretty miniatures of Wallace Collections Boudoir Cabinet. Other exhibits will include some of the shoes that Blahnik made for the Sofia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette.
The Wallace Collections Director Dr Xavier Bray said: “This is an incredibly exciting opportunity to showcase the way in which the Wallace Collection has inspired one of the world’s greatest fashion minds,” said Wallace Collection director Dr Xavier Bray. “It also enables our audiences to see the collection in a new light and make connections between the many artistic disciplines to be found in the museum.”
An Enquiring Mind: Manolo Blahnik at the Wallace Collection will open on the 10th of June 2019 and the exhibition will run until the 1st of September 2019.
