If you’re sick and tired of the vegans having all the fun, then never fear because US meat festival Meatopia is back this summer – and it’s going to be HOT HOT HOT!! So hot, in fact, that the organisers of the event are describing the festival as the ultimate bacchanalian party!

“Founded in the US by the late, great Josh Ozersky and brought to the UK by a trio of passionate food enthusiasts, Meatopia is a weekend-long love affair with food, drink, fire and music” says the website for the event.

The festival regularly gathers together the world’s best ‘live-fire’ chefs from all corners of the world to each cook an exclusive dish over sustainably-sourced wood and charcoal.

The first festival was such a success that Meatopia has now become an annual event in the US as well as becoming a fixture in London for the past eight years. However, Meatopia 2020 was cancelled due to the pandemic and the organisers of the event are keen to make up for lost time with a real stonker of a 2021 festival.

From London, the likes of James Cochran, the From The Ashes trio, Sarit Packer & Itamar Srulovich of Honey & Co, Freddie Janssen of Snackbar, Melissa Thompson, Richard Corrigan, the Fallow guys, Robin Gill, Big Has, and Karan Gokani of Hoppers will all be cooking this year, as will Adriana Cavita and Niklas Ekstedt who are opening in the capital following the fest.

Roberta Hall-McCarron of The Little Chartroom in Edinburgh, Brad Carter of Carters of Moseley in Birmingham, and Bristol-based Genevieve Taylor will all also be coming to town to cook up a storm, with many more chefs hitting the grills.Once again TAPtopia has the brews covered, and with butchery demos, street theatre and live music, it’s set to be three days of meaty madness. Stretchy trousers at the ready.

James Cochran, Karan Gokani, Richard Corrigan, Robin Gill and Big Has, are just some of the star names confirmed for this year’s event with more guests expected to be announced soon.

Richard Corrigan is the veteran chef, writer and TV personality responsible for such esteemed restaurants as Bentley’s, Corrigan’s, and the recently opened, Daffodil Mulligan. The chef’s passion for food was kindled at an early age. Corrigan’s family owned a farm and his early experiences of farm life gave him an appreciation of the pleasures of simple, wholesome produce, as well as an understanding of the process involved in producing food.

The chef’s family grew their own vegetables and Corrigan’s mother churned butter and baked bread for the family table. Food was an unsentimental business for the young Irishman but good food was plentiful.

These experiences have shaped the Irishman’s views of cooking and his restaurants and menus are continually focused on harnessing the finest natural ingredients and most seasonal foods.

Karan Gokani is the Mumbai born star lawyer who gave up his promsing legal career to pursue a career in the food industry. Now a director of the Sri Lankan and South Indian inspired restaurant chain Hoppers chain, Gokani has now brought his formidable experience and culinary skills to a grateful London dining scene.

The ‘Champion of Champions’ from BBC Two’s Great British Menu 2018, Cochran is the owner and head chef at Islington eaterie 1251. Part Scottish and part Jamaican, Cochran has previously worked at The Ledbury and The Harwood Arms under acclaimed head chef Brett Graham.

Apart from the food, the festival will also feature live music, top quality DJs, workshops and live demonstrations.

Meatopia will take place at London’s Tobacco Dock from the 2nd to the 4th of September 2022. More information about the festival can be found here.
