Described as the world’s first super boutique hotel, the Londoner will boast 350 rooms, five restaurants, a rooftop bar and two cinemas when it finally opens in Leicester Square.

Due in 2021, the venue is also promising a spa, swimming pool, gym and tavern, the last of which will offer daily unplugged music performances alongside the expected food and drink.

The Londoner is the work of hotel chain Edwardian Hotels, whose Creative Director Rob Steul told the Evening Standard recently: “Our goal is to make Leicester Square even more of a destination than it already is. The brief was to make a quality building that will give back to London.”

The new hotel will open on a site previously used by the former Odeon Cinema West End. Edwardian hotels reportedly paid around £100 million pounds for the site with a further £300 million set aside to redevelop the site.

The Odeon West End was one of London’s oldest cinemas, opening to the public in 1930. A regular site for film premieres, the venue became one o of the most prestigious cinemas in the UK.

In order to maintain the buildings history as a venue for watching movies, The Londoner will feature not one but two new Odeon Luxe cinemas.

The design team behind the project are Australian architecture group Woods Bagot, who recently completed the Manhatta restaurant in New York.

The hotel has already been dubbed the Iceberg as so much of the venue will be below ground. When finished the building will be just 30 metres high, but the foundation of the building will be 32 metres deep, meaning that 51% of the Londoner will be below ground.

Iype Abraham, the commercial development director of Edwardian Hotels, explained that this was due to the need to the buildings height restrictions. “We wanted to create a boutique hotel that was grand in size but boutique in experiences and that meant we had to include various guest offerings. There was only one way to do that and that was to go down.” He said.

This extra space will be put to good use. A massive ballroom will allow for up to 864 seated guests will a spa and swimming pool will ensure that the hotel lives up to its five star billing.

The Londoner is set to open on the 28th of May 2021. More information about the hotel can be found here.
