If you’re looking for a hairspray that will add vitality, volume and shine, then you really couldn’t do much better than this carefully crafted formula, which has been delighting audiences since it first debuted in the West End in 2010.
Hairspray the Musical is a tried and trusted confection, whose huge heart and insanely catch songs will no doubt have a whole new generation rocking when the show is revived in the spring of 2021.
Micheal Ball’s Olivier Award winning turn as Edna Turnblad will once again be at the centre of this movie turned musical. Playing the mother of the production’s heroine, Ball has earned huge acclaim for the role, not to mention a string of awards.
The story follows Edna’s daughter, Tracey Turnblad, a plump Baltimore teenager who harbours dreams of dancing on a local dance TV show. When Turnblad finally succeeds in winning a place on the programme, it sets of a train of events that will turn Tracey into an overnight celebrity and propel her into a battle for equal rights.
The story first came to prominence in 1988 with the release of Hairspray the movie. The film proved a hit, and it inspired not only a musical, but also a second film.
The stage production of Hairspray was an immediate success when it opened on Broadway in 2002. In 2003, it was recognised at the Tony Awards with 13 nominations. The show ran fora total of six years, and when it closed in 2009, it had racked up 2,642 performances.
In 2007, talks took place in London with the aim of bringing the show to the West End. The Shaftesbury Theatre was secured and the UK version of Hairspray debuted on the 11th of October 2007.
The cast of the UK version of the show included Mel Smith as Wilbur Turnblad, Leanne Jones as Tracey, and in a role that would prove one of his greatest successes, Michael Ball as Edna Turnblad.
The Uk version of Hairspray continued the success of the US original, garnering an impressive eleven Olivier Award nominations with the show going on to win Best New Musical, Best Actress and Best Actor in a Musical. Despite this success, this version of Hairspray also closed, on the 28th of March 2010.
Then, in early May 2019, it was announced that a version of Hairspray the Musical would begin in 2020 at the London Coliseum. It was also announced that Michael Ball would reprise his role as Edna Turnblad.
