Fancy seeing hot new stand-up comedian Tez Ilyas live? Then you’d better get yourself down to the Leciester Square Theatre in September 2021.
For that’s when the fast rising star of BBC3’s satirical The Man Like Mobeen will be bringing his subversive brand of stand up to the capital.
Ilyas has become a popular name on the UK stand up circuit with his trademark mix of acidic wit and dizzying flights of fancy.
The comedian came to prominence in 2015 with his first ever stand up set, Tez Talks. The success of the show prompted the BBC to offer Ilyas his own radio show on radio 4. The star followed Tez Talks with another stand up show called Made in Britain (2016). It proved such a hit that every single performance of the show sold out. A third tour (Teztify) followed in 2018, with the show easily repeating the success of Made in Britain.
Ilyas has supplemented his stand up work with a string of appearances on the small screen. The comedian has appeared on Mock the Week (BBC Two), The Last Leg (Channel 4) and Live from the Comedy Store (Comedy Central).
With so many attention making TV and live appearances, the comedian’s public profiled has naturally risen considerably. His deceptively gentle style led the Telegraph newspaper to describe Ilyas’s comedy as “candyfloss with a razorblade inside”. The Guardian, meanwhile, found the comedian to be slick but warned that Ilyas’s most potent weapon was his “bold, subversive streak”.
Channel 4’S Commissioning Editor for Entertainment Karen Murdoch went further, however, calling the comedian: “an incredibly exciting talent” and commenting on how timely the Ilyas’s material was, given current political and social developments across the globe.
