Promising Young Woman was scheduled to be released on the 17th of April in the UK but due to the Coronavirus Crisis, the movie has been postponed. We will upload more information about the new release date when we get it.
What’s it about:
Promising Young Woman (PYW) follows medical school drop out Cassie as she goes in search of revenge on men in general, and a cluster of sleazy douche bags in particular, in Emerald Fennel’s new #metoo powered drama.
Targeting the kind of guy who sees a woman passed out in a nightclub as an easy target, Cassie feigns inebriation on a weekly basis in a variety of locations, in order to confront the would be predators when they try to have their wicked way with her.
“Every week, I go to a club. I act like I’m too drunk to stand. And every week, a nice guy comes over to see if I’m okay,” she says.
Who wrote Promising Young Woman?
The film is the work of Emerald Fennell, whose previous writing credits include Season 2 of Killing Eve. Before that, Fennel worked as an actress, starring as Camilla Shand in The Crown and as Nurse Patsy Mount in Call the Midwife.
In an interview with Empire Magazine, Fennell had this to say about her new film: “I was so interested in people who aren’t evil, and how our culture contributes to all of us making bad calls because it’s so normal. In Britain and in America too, part of our seduction culture for men and women is getting hammered….Is it worth interrogating stuff that we think is normal?”
Who’s starring in the movie?
PYW stars promising young actress Carey Mulligan, who took home a BAFTA award for Best Actress for her role in 2010’s An Education. Among the male leads in the movie are Adam Brody, Bo Burnham and Christopher Mintz-Plasse.
The casting of such ordinary guy actors initially took the movie industry by surprise. However, Fennell has defended the decision to cast the actors in the movie.
“I didn’t want to cast lots of malevolent goblins,” she said to Empire Magazine. “I wanted to cast people that we all want to like. When you hear something about somebody you love, you don’t want to believe it. I want to test at every stage our affiliations, our allegiances”.
