In these strange times, with Euro 2020 postponed and literally every sporting fixture in the annual calendar cancelled, could there be a better way to recapture the magic of live sport than by watching Terry Venables’ brave England journey to the semi-finals of Euro 96?
Set to a glorious soundtrack, courtesy of the Lightning Seeds’ ‘Three Lions’, football came home in spectacular fashion in 1996, with England not only hosting but also starring in the tournament.
Venables’ squad had almost an embarrassment of riches, offcourse, with Paul Gascoigne, Teddy Sheringham, Alan Shearer, David Seaman and Sol Campbell all in the squad.
Despite this, England still found themselves a little fancied outsider. However, with a vociferous crowd behind them, Venables’ team surprised many with their outstanding football during the championship.
For instance, who can ever forget Paul Gascoigne’s brilliant goal against Scotland in the group stage of the competition?
Well, if you’d like to relive the event, nows your chance.
ITV Hub have gone into their archive and the broadcaster have unearthed all of the action from the tournament, with all 31 games set to be released by the terrestrial channel.
The Head of Digital Channels & Acquisitions at ITV, Paul Mortimer had this to say about the event: “Nothing brings the country together like Euro fever, and with this year’s tournament postponed to 2021, we’re giving our audience a chance to relive one of the all-time great sporting events, Euro ’96. Thanks to the ITV Hub and ITV4, there’ll be no shortage of vintage football classics for fans to indulge in over the next few months.”
So, it’s time to get the beers in, time to get your England kit out the wash, and time to start believing.
Euro 96 will be available on the ITV Hub and ITV4 in early May 2020. More information about the tournament can be found here.
