Performance poetry trailblazers Apples and Snakes have announced that they will be bringing some of the UK’s leading spoken word artists into the nation’s living rooms this spring. Apple and Snakes at Home will see the cream of the poetry world coming together for a series of one hour streamed performances culminating in a grand finale.
A spokesperson for the company had this to say of the initiative: “As we find ourselves distanced physically from one another, we know how vital it is to continue supporting artists and the wider spoken word community through this time of change and uncertainty. That’s why we’re excited to continue our work, finding new ways to connect and to push the boundaries of what poetry is and can be”.
Apples and Snakes began life when a group of poets decided to host an event above their local pub. From those humble beginnings, the company have grown to become England’s leading spoken word poetry organisation, offering support and guidance to the UK’s next wave of performance poetry artists.
Now with over 35 years under their belt, the company can boast of having worked with the likes of Billy Bragg, Kate Tempest and Benjamin Zephaniah.
In that time, Apples and Snakes have forged a series of prestigious alliances and collaborations, having worked with the BBC, The Tate Group, the Southbank Centre, Penguin Random House, the Birmingham Repertory Theatre and the RSC.
For Apples and Snakes at Home, the company will bring together a veritable who’s who of the UK spoken word scene, with the likes of Yomi Sode, Polarbear and Vanessa Kisuule all set to take part.
Nigerian British writer Sode was shortlisted for the Jerwood Compton Poetry Fellowship in 2017. He has also written for Rialto magazine as well as having sold out his last spoken word tour.
Polarbear (a.k.a Steven Camden) is one of the countries top spoken word artists. A published author and playwright as well as an accomplished spoken word artist, Camden has performed his distinctive brand of poetry at prestigious events around the globe.
Bristol based writer and performer Vanessa Kisuule has been wowing poetry lovers on the UK spoken word circuit for the last ten years. Her recent one woman show SEXY earned rave reviews from critics and she has worked with, the Southbank Centre, RADA and Warner Music to name but three.
Apples and Snakes at Home will take place on Thursday evenings from the 29th of April 2020 . You can access the show here.
