If you thought that drive in cinemas were an exclusively American thing, then you’d better think again, as a glut of the venues prepare to open in the UK this summer. One of those newbies is @TheDriveIn. The cinema will take in eleven British cities in twelve weeks, with a family friendly mix of blockbusters & 80s hits which is certain to prove a massive draw.
@TheDriveIn will not cater solely to film lovers, either. The team behind the initiative have promised stand-up comedy, bingo, and a silent disco, to complement the line up of films. There will be food aplenty too, with a team of roller skating waiters ready to take your orders.
“We’re incredibly excited to bring our modern day version of the classic drive in to the UK this summer” said a spokesman for the cinema.
“Our aim is for @TheDriveIn to be an experience that brings real joy this summer and the perfect antidote to a post-lockdown world, and we promise to deliver it within a safe yet fun environment. See you at the drive in.”
The initiative could not be better timed, with Britons still practicing social distancing in the aftermath of the Covid 19 outbreak.
There are few entertainment forms better designed to cope with the socially distanced world of 2020 than drive in cinemas. With their outdoor venues and car bound movie lovers, the cinemas are set for a big comeback in the next 18 months.
@TheDriveIn have gone to great measures to protect their customers, too. A strict parking system will ensure cars stay two metres away from each other, while a sophisticated ticket recognition system will allow ticket holders to be identified by their number plates only.
Tickets begin at £35 (per car) with customers advised to book in advance.
@TheDriveIn will be in London from the 6th to the 12th of July with tickets on sale from the 22nd of May 2020. More information about the cinema can be found here.
