If 2020 hasn’t provided enough scares already, cult movie festival FrightFest is set to offer up even more, as the event prepares to go online this August.
A perennial favourite of the horror movie crowd, the festival has become one of the must do movie events of the summer, since it began life at the Prince Charles cinema in 2000.
Th brainchild of three movie buffs (Paul McEvoy, Ian Rattray, and Alan Jones), the festival was set up in the hopes of emulating the success of similar festivals in mainland Europe.
From humble beginnings, FrightFest has grown dramatically, with fans of horror movies coming from every corner of the globe to attend the festival in recent years.
The event, which traditionally takes place over the final weekend of August, normally takes place at the Prince Charles cinema in the West End.
Even though cinemas have been given the green light to reopen, however, the stringent restrictions under which the industry must operate means that it will be some time before we see movie festivals IRL.
While many festivals have chosen to go into hibernation, however, thankfully for us, FrightFest has elected to go online.
Although the platform for the festival will be radically different, the organisers of the event are promising that this year’s festival will include all of the normal FrightFest favourites, including special guests, live events, Q&As and an array of short films. And this is in addition to the 25 feature films that will feature in the festival proper.
The co-director of the festival, Ian Rattray, had this to say about this summer’s FrightFest: “We can’t recreate the special atmosphere of our public gatherings but we hope our online event will go some way to bringing the fans and filmmakers back together.”
Rattray was also keen to promote the event to a new audience. “If you’re new to horror, what better way to dip a toe in the water/blood/gelatinous flesh-eating slime?” he said.
FrightFest Virtual will take place from the 28th to the 31st of August 2020. More information about the festival can be found here.
