One of South London’s best loved venues is busy putting the finishing touches to a three day virtual reality music festival. Live From the O2 Academy Brixton will see the legendary site team up with Live Nation UK and MelodyVR for the concerts, which will utilise pioneering “360 virtual reality” technology.
Filming on a purpose built set within the ionic South London building, the festival will showcase the best of hip hop, rap, R&B, and grime with over 70 artists from the UK and US.
The gigs will be totally bespoke, with the producers of the festival working closely with the individual artists themselves, in order to create an “exclusive, unique and premium event with world-class production values”.
Live From the O2 Brixton Academy will be available to watch on the MelodyVR platform. The virtual reality platform can be accessed via an app on compatible smartphones or on the Oculus VR device.
Festival content will be available to view in the following countries: UK, USA Canada, France, Germany, Sweden, Spain, Italy, Portugal, the Netherlands, Ireland, Switzerland, Austria, Greece, and Belgium.
The gigs will put the user at the heart of the ‘live’ experience, with fans able to not just view, but also connect and interact with the content. Additionally, in a unique first, gig goers will be able to choose their vantage point in the virtual auditorium, with a variety of possible vantage points including several on the stage with the performers themselves!
“We look forward to partnering with MelodyVR and presenting Live From O2 Academy Brixton which will connect artists with fans globally through the latest and exciting 360° VR technology, direct from a purpose-built studio set within this iconic and world-famous venue” said the Chairman of Live Nation UK, Denis Desmond.
The Brixton Academy has a formidable reputation for live music, having in the past staged gigs by the likes of Snoop Dogg, Grace Jones, Bob Dylan and Madonna. With the venue currently closed because of the Coronavirus Crisis, however, the Academy’s new ‘Live From’ initiative offers the venue a great way of continuing its tradition of staging iconic gigs.
Live From The O2 Brixton Academy might not be able to match the full on immersive experience of an actual gig, with its sweaty mosh pits and spontaneous singalongs, however, the event offer the music lover the next best thing – a 360 degree virtual reality experience with the ability to connect and interact with your favourite artists.
The line-up for the festival has yet to be announced. However, you can find out more about the festival here.
