What better way to get back into theatre-going mode than a brand-new, jazzy, romantic comedy based on the 1993 hit film Sleepless in Seattle?
Theatres are going live again in August and you can start off the new season with Sleepless, a new musical starring Girls Aloud’s Kimberly Walsh and The Wanted’s Jay McGuiness. Based on the Academy Award nominated original screenplay the show promises to be full of charm, humour and hopeless romanticism.
Set against a delightfully jazzy, old-school big-band back-drop, Walsh has described the show more as ‘a play with music’ than a full-out musical. New writers, Robert Scott and Brendan Cull, are giving the classic story its musical twist with a 12-piece jazz orchestra.
In this adaption we see Big: The Musical’s leading pair reunite as Sam and Annie. Struggling to adapt to life after his wife’s death, Sam moves with his son, Jonah, to Seattle. Jonah appeals to the listeners of a popular radio show to soothe his lonely father’s heart and Sam soon becomes a greatly admired singleton across America. The story peaks journalist Annie’s attention and she finds herself falling for a voice she’s only ever heard over the radio.
Performed at the new Troubadour Theatre in Wembley Park, the show will open 25 August and run through until 27 September, under full World Health Organisation and Public Health England guidelines. Additionally, on the 27 August Sleepless will be hosting a special gala night for NHS heroes. To book tickets and find out more about the gala night, see the musical’s website, here.
With its iconic scenes atop the Empire State Building, this is a classic romantic comedy that promises to be London’s next biggest musical hit.
