Back To The Future

Prepare to go on the journey of a lifetime as Back To The Future the Musical begins preparations for its London opening in 2021. Peter Gray reports.

One of Hollywood’s best loved movie franchises is being remade for the stage with Back To The Future the Musical set to open in London in the summer of 2021.

The new show, which comes from the same production team as Ghost The Musical, is based on the hugely successful film series starring Micheal J Fox, Christopher Lloyd, and Lea Thompson.

Back To The Future will feature several hits from the blockbuster movies, including Huey Lewis’s anthemic The Power Of Love and Johnny B Good. In addition to that, legendary songwriter Glen Ballard (Man In The Mirror) has penned a series of new songs for the production.

The Musical tells the story of teenager Marty McFly and his adventures in a customised DeLorean which has been turned into a time machine by eccentric inventor Dr. Emmett Brown.

Finding himself back in the year 1955, McFly inadvertently becomes entangled in his parent’s high school romance, realising that if he cannot get the two together, he will no longer exist in the present day!

Back To The Future the Musical features Olly Dobson (Matilda the Musical) as Marty McFly, Roger Bart (Desperate Housewives) as Dr Emmett Brown, with Aidan Cutler taking on the role of notorious school bully ‘Biff Tannen. The cast is completed by Courtney-Mae Briggs as Jennifer Parker and Will Haswell as Dave McFly.

This new production of the phenomenally popular story is directed by Tony Award-winning director John Rando, with sets by Tim Hatley and choreography by Chris Bailey.

The long awaited production opened at the Manchester Opera House on the 20th of February 2020 to generally positive reviews from critics, however, due to the coronavirus crisis, the production was suspended on the 16th of March 2020.
