Piccadilly Circus’s famous billboards will be transformed into a giant digital canvas this October for a display showcasing the works of some of the world’s top artists. Entitled the Circa project, the initiative will explore how different artists perceive the world in 2020, with the results displayed on the billboards at 8.20pm each evening.
The initiative will kick off on the 1st of October with a film by the legendary Chinese artist Ai Weiwei. New York Days follows the artist “from the year [he] was born through to the current unceasing pandemic threatening the human condition globally”. In so doing, the film highlights some of the key moments in the artist’s personal and professional life and some of the most significant influences on his art. A two minute segment of the film will be shown each day throughout October.
In a statement released before the event began, Weiwei said that CIRCA “offered a very important platform for artists to exercise their practice and to reach out to a greater public”.
Weiwei’s October residency will be followed by a special programme of works curated by Elvira Dyangani Ose with the British artist Eddie Peake rounding up the season in December.
The initiative will be accompanied by an online platform (Circa Art) featuring livestreams of each event as well as additional material by the participating artists. A series of limited edition works has been created especially for the event, with the proceeds going to charities in the UK cultural sector.
