Pop legend Paul Weller will be playing a gig at the Barbican Arts Centre early next year as part of the venue’s Live from the Barbican Series. The gig, which represents Weller’s first live performance in two years, will see the legendary musician and Jam frontman team up with the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Jules Buckley for a full scale retrospective of his impressive career.
Spanning everything from Weller’s early work in The Jam to brand new songs from his as yet unreleased new album, the gig at the Barbican will showcase the former Jam frontman’s enduring artistry and influence while giving his many fans a chance to hear Weller’s best songs given the symphonic treatment.
One of the UK’s most respected musicians and with a career stretching back nearly fifty years, Weller is one of the most famous names in the UK music Industry.
As the Jam, Weller and his bandmates achieved fame for their leftfield pop songs, with tracks like Going Underground and Town Called Malice becoming massive hits.
Following the break up of the band in 1982, the artist quickly moved to form a new group, the Style Council. With Weller on lead guitar and vocals, Mick Talbot on keys, Steve White on drums and Weller’s then girlfriend Dee C. Lee on vocals, the band were soon a dominant force in the 1980s music industry.
Eschewing the modish rock of the Jam for a much more soulful style, the band discovered a sound which fit perfectly with the music which was then dominating the charts. Several massive hits were to follow, including Shout To The Top and My Ever Changing Moods.
After the Style Council split in 1989, Weller found himself embarking on a solo career, with the album Paul Weller released in 1992. A string of hit albums were to follow, including the Mercury Prize nominated Wild Wood and the chart topping Stanley Road.
