Good Grief

Good Grief demonstrates that the pandemic is no barrier to the arts. Peter Gray reports.

Fleabag’s Sian Clifford is all set to star as Cat in Lorien Hayes’ romantic comedy Good Grief early next year. An innovative hybrid of theatre and film, the show was recently described as “sharp, funny, brutal, irreverent and quintessentially British.”

Clifford is best known as the sister of Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s Fleabag in the hit comedy of the same name. The actress, who more recently starred as Tina in the Sky One drama Two Weeks to Live, will appear alongside Nikesh Patel and Artemis Fowl in the new production.

“It’s neither film nor theatre” said Clifford, speaking to the Radio Times about the play. “it’s a hybrid that’s why it’s so thrilling to be part of it, something that is so innovative and has been born entirely of this chaos”.

It’s really thrilling, a bit of a brain maze, structured around the stages of grief. I always said it would take a lot to get me back on stage, but the play blew me away, I absolutely tore through it, it made me weep. And I loved the idea of doing something radical and helping save our industry and to keep people engaged with the arts.”

The Fleabag connection continues with Good Grief’s soundtrack. Isobel Waller-Bridge (Phoebe’s sister) has been commissioned to create the music  – which also sees her teaming up again with Clifford after the pair appeared in her sister’s smash hit comedy.

Lorien Hayes was clearly delighted to see her heartfelt one act comedy finally go into production. “When I wrote ‘Good Grief’ she said to the BBC:“no one said it was long enough to produce on stage.

For it to have a life now – virtually – at a time where we miss and need theatre – is a truly wonderful thing. Theatre has to survive and our art adapt, to make storytelling vital in the midst of this pandemic”.

With continuing uncertainty about the feasibility of theatre productions during the pandemic, The Good Grief has elected to forego its theatrical run, choosing instead to make itself available online for theatre goers to watch in the comfort of their own homes.

Tickets for the show are available now with discounts for those who purchase their tickets between now and Christmas Day.

Good Grief will be available to watch from 7.30pm on the 15th of February 2021 until 11:55pm on the 15th of April 2021. More information about the production can be found here.
