The One

Why leave love to chance? Peter Gray reports on Netflix's new sci fi drama.

Netflix’s The One poses a simple question: what would you do if a simple DNA test could reveal your perfect partner?

Set in the near future, the series begins with a massive scientific breakthrough. A team of researchers have discovered that every human being has one gene in common with one other person. The discovery has massive implications for medicine, pharmaceuticals, religion, and above all, human relationships. The One looks at the application of this science to the field of romance and dating.

Adapted by John Marr’s novel of the same name, The One sees Netflix team up with Howard Overman (Misfits) for an exploration of how science can change something which we all consider fundamental to human existence: the search for love.

Here’s everything you need to know about Netflix’s The One:

What’s the plot of The One?

Netflix have been incredibly tight lipped about the plot of The One but going by John Marrs’ book and the recently released teaser trailer, this is what we gather.

A dating network have begun offering a revolutionary new service. For a small fee, the company will carry out a DNA test which will reveal your perfect partner. All it takes is a single strand of hair.

“No matter how good your relationship” says the official synopsis for the show. “Which one of us can honestly say we haven’t thought about whether there is someone better out there? What if a hair sample is all it takes to find them?

The idea is simple, but the implications are explosive. We will never think of love and relationships in the same way again.”

Who is in the cast of The One?

Hannah Ware (The First) stars as Rebecca. The CEO of MatchDNA, Rebecca is at the forefront of the new science of DNA testing for the perfect partner. The cast for the series also includes Stephen Campbell Moore, Diarmaid Murtagh, Pallavi Sharda, and Zoe Tapper.
