Jamie Wei Huang AW21

Detour finds Huang in fine form. Sophie Savage reports.

Taiwanese fashion designer Jamie Wei Huang premiered her latest collection Detour at London Fashion Week yesterday, with a movie shot on a rock face in her native land.

With indie rock band Fei Cheng playing in the background and a group of pretty young models posing on the rocks, Huang’s clever clothes came magically to life, as the London based contemporary dancer Yu – Hsien Wu writhed and contorted in the foreground.

Detour takes its inspiration from The Eagles’ Hotel California, with the press release for the collection including several lines from the song.

“This could be Heaven or this could be Hell. We are programmed to receive. You can check-out any time you like, But you can never leave! ” it says.

What any of this has to do with the clothes is anyone’s guess.

Confusing messaging aside, Detour proved a delight, with Huang once again showcasing her striking individuality and remarkable craftsmanship.

Furthering her interest in luxury sports and casualwear, the designer produced a group of clothes that were stylish, elegant and ready to go wherever the day may take you.

Patchwork, plaid, knitwear & structured tailoring all featured, with the collection striking just the right balance between smart and relaxed.

Individual pieces ranged from raincoats & structured jackets to oversized cardigans & jumpers with the season’s ubiquitous pinafore also included in a set of primary colours.

Plaid dominated the collection, adorning everything from semi formal jackets to funky trousers, with different types of checks used together in the same outfit.

Accessories ranged from cute little tulip hats in an assortment of primary colours to bum bags with massive gold chain straps.

The colour palette, meanwhile, was dominated by shades of green, blue and yellows.

The overall effect was relaxed, fun and cosmopolitan. These are clothes for everyday living: for day trips, visiting friends and going to the beach – ie exactly what we’ll all be doing once the pandemic is over.

Huang graduated from Central Saint Martins College in 2012. Following a period interning with Alexander MacQueen, the young designer decided to set up her own eponymous label, with the aim of creating self-expression through details and materials.

In the intervening years the designer has established herself as one of the most exciting luxury womenswear designers in the world with several critically acclaimed collections under her belt as well as a host of devoted followers.

Jamie Wei Huang’s Detour will further enhance the Taiwanese designer’s reputation for luxurious casual and sportwear. Benefiting from a quirky mixture of materials and styles, it is Huang’s striking craftsmanship and quirky individuality which proves the real winner.
