As I type this, the thought of IRL festivals with crowds, sweaty bodies, alcohol, music and absolutely NO social distancing seems almost mind blowing. Yet, at some point this summer, this will be our New Normal, or, to be more precise, the Comforting Old Normal Which Existed Before Everyone Started Using Phrases Like The New Normal.
Festival season is back!
And what a summer of festivals we have to look forward to! OK, admittedly there’s no Glastonbury this year. The festival fell victim to the virus in early January 2021. Reading & Leeds, the Isle of Wight, Creamfields, Camp Bestival and Latitude, however, are all very definitely on.
The We Out There Festival
Joining that distinguished list is a relative newcomer to UK festival season. We Out Here launched to great acclaim in the summer of 2019. Curated by legendary broadcaster, DJ and record label owner Giles Peterson, the event offered festival goers a cool mix of soul, jazz, funk, R&B and hip-hop curated by the venerable Peterson himself.
The 2019 festival
The inaugural event took place at Abbots Ripton, Cambridgeshire with an impressive line up of musical talent including saxophonist Gary Bartz, pianist Joe Armon-Jones and afro funk purveyors Idris Ackamoor and the Pyramids.
The event received extremely positive reviews, with the Evening Standard describing the festival as ‘quite the get together’ and complimenting Peterson on the phenomenal group of artists that he had assembled for the event.
We Out Here 2021
Well, the good news is that We Out Here is back in 2021 and the festival has an even better line up this year than for its inaugural event in 2019, with Sons Of Kemet, KOKOROKO, Leon Vynehall and Nubya Garcia all featuring.
And if that were not enough, the line up will also feature the likes of Floating Points, Black Country, New Road, Ezra Collective, Joe Armon-Jones, Yussef Dayes, Emma-Jean Thackray, Ego Ella May, Black Country, New Road and Los Bitchos for what will surely be the jazz/soul/r’n’b event of the summer of 2021.
So, if you fancy seeing some quality Jazz, funk, r’n’b and hip hop this year, you could do a lot worse than get yourself down to Cambridgeshire.
The We Out Here Festival will take place from the 19th to the 22nd of August 2021. More information about the festival can be found here.
