Hawley Wharf

Say hello to a dazzling range of residential, retail and leisure choice at Camden's forthcoming mixed use space, Hawley Wharf. Peter Gray reports.

With over 200 luxury apartments, 150 stores, and over 60 places to eat and drink, Hawley Wharf looks like being London’s next hot destination.

Set in the heart of trendy Camden, the new shopping and restaurant complex boasts over 580,000 square foot of retail, drinking and dining space, in a pocket of land bounded by the Regent’s canal and the Overground station.

The complex has been in the works for the best part of two years; however, it seems like all the hard work is finally starting to pay off as the first stage of the new development prepares to open later this year.

The latest news at the development is that the Curzon cinema chain have now signed a lease on a massive building in the complex in which they will open a state of the art five-screen cinema.

The building, which will apparently span the length of six railway arches, will have a design by award winning architect Takero Shimazaki and take its inspiration from New York jazz bars.

“We are thrilled to be launching our latest landmark cinema within the dynamic Hawley Wharf Camden development, taking a tangible plot of Camden’s history” said Curzon’s chief executive, Philip Knatchbull.

“Last summer we worked with LabTech on a successful pop-up cinema in the heart of Camden Market, so we know the demand is there. The railway arches are a unique space, and we are confident it will become a much-loved destination for film lovers.”

Apart from the state of the art cinema, restaurants and shops, Hawley Wharf will also boast its own co-working space as well as with plans for a farmer’s market, a new public square and even a school!

In total, eight new buildings will be constructed, with the complex also making use of two already standing buildings, including the grade II listed 1 Hawley Road. These ten buildings will be arranged around three new public spaces.

The development is the brainchild of Yaron Shahar, the CEO of Labtech Holdings. The company also holds the deeds for near neighbours Camden Market and Shahar is keen to see his latest development recreate the success of the world famous market venue.

He said, “It’s a very beautiful project that was built on the banks of the river. One stage is already occupied and the next two stages will be opened after the coronavirus crisis will end, and I estimate that this will happen towards the end of the year. It’s an area that has genuine mixed usage. Most of the offices are already leased out to tech companies. They love privacy and also that their employees have the options of restaurants and parking. The apartments are premium apartments of the highest standard that there is.”
