LGBT+ retirement community coming to London

Tonic Housing's Vauxhall complex will be a UK first. Peter Gray reports.

London is finally getting a dedicated LGBT+ retirement community. The Tonic Housing complex will open in a series of buildings overlooking the River Thames at Vauxhall this summer.

The complex, which has been designed by Norman Foster, will make history when it finally opens as there is currently no dedicated LGBT+ retirement provision in the UK despite the clear need for such a facility.

Alongside a variety of one and two bed apartments, the facility will also have its own restaurant, floating roof garden and roof terrace. And with the Thames right on its doorstep, Tonic residents will be able to take advantage of the full range of cultural opportunities that the Southbank and Bankside affords.

The facility has been made possible by a £5.7 million pounds loan from the Mayor of London’s office, with the money being used to ensure that the LGBT+ community have the same level of retirement facilities as other communities in London.
