Too Close

Emily Watson stars as a forensic psychologist tasked with evaluating a manipulative and resourceful suspect. Peter Gray reports.

Based on the novel by Clara Salaman, ITV’s upcoming drama thriller Too Close follows forensic psychiatrist Dr Emma Robertson as she tries to unravel the truth behind a heinous crime. Tasked with assessing the chief suspect’s state of mind, Robertson finds her own life coming under scrutiny as she begins to get to know the suspect, Connie Mortensen.

Too Close has hit a home run with its casting of Chernobyl star Emily Watson as the good doctor and Denise Gough as the mysterious Mortensen. Watson is perfectly cast as the outwardly solid yet inwardly confused doctor and Gough makes the perfect foil as the clever but manipulative Mortensen. And if you add in Salaman’s fantastic source material, it is not hard to see why ITV’s latest drama is so eagerly awaited.

Here’s everything you need to know about ITV’s new blockbuster:

What is Too Close about?

When renowned forensic psychologist Dr Emma Robinson is tasked with analysing the defendant in a high profile case, the experienced psychologist is about to get more than she bargained for.

Connie Mortensen has been charged with the crime but she is claiming that she cannot remember what happened on the night in question. Moreover, Mortensen is a master of manipulation and she will stop at nothing to get the good doctor on her side.
“Connie has a searing insight into Emma’s deepest insecurities and starts to brutally exploit them. Their sessions become a complex psychological game with confusing undercurrents” says the official synopsis for the series.

As Robinson tries to ascertain the truth about Mortenson’s pivotal relationship with her best friend Ness and the relationship’s influence on her actions on the night in question, she is drawn ever deeper into the complicated web of games that Mortenson is playing.

Will she be able to discover the truth before she is dragged under by the manipulative Mortensen?

Who is in the cast of Too Close?

TV thriller veteran Emily Watson (Apple Tree Yard, Chernobyl) takes the lead role of Robinson with Denise Gough playing Mortensen.

Watson has made a career out of playing strong, complex females but her latest role presented her with an opportunity to show a different side to such characters. Robertson may be a highly qualified professional but she is also a woman in crisis, and Watson is relishing representing the character’s struggles on the screen.

“It was a juicy subject to get into and to talk through the layers and layers,” says Emily. “It’s fascinating because this is the absolute bread and butter of what acting is. It’s taking a character’s layers and unpicking and unpeeling them” she said to the Daily Express about her role in Too Close.

In addition to the duo, Thalissa Teixeira (Two Weeks to Live) plays the key role of Connie’s best friend, Ness Jones.

Chizzy Akudolu, Risteárd Cooper, Eileen Davies and Nina Wadia also star in the ITV drama.

When will Too Close land on the small screen?

The drama will be screened across three consecutive nights on ITV beginning on the 12th of April 2021.
