With the future of this year’s Notting Hill Carnival hanging in the balance, there couldn’t be a better time to welcome a new August Bank Holiday event to the London events calendar.

Describing itself as a celebration of black culture from around the globe, The Yam Carnival is set to land in late August at Clapham Common with a line up featuring such luminaries as Davido, Princess Nokia, Pa Salieu, Kehlani, Honey Dijon, Nao, Ari Lennox, Femi Kuti, Ms Banks and IAMDDB.

The food offering will be similarly global, with the organisers of the event promising the ‘ultimate foodie paradise’ with ‘African influenced food trucks’ and chefs from across London serving up ‘both contemporary and cutting edge cuisine to traditional home comforts’.

A highlight of the event will be the inclusion of several masquerades or ‘masked plays’. Popular in Africa, the plays celebrate the practice of ancestral reverence and worship while representing the ancestral spirits return to bless the present with the divine presence of the past, in the positive influence of the future.

The Yam Carnival will take place on Clapham Common on Saturday the 28th of August 2021. More information about the event can be found here.
