1899

Much is expected of Netflix's latest period drama, 1899. Peter Gray reports.

It may have been dubbed the ‘new Bridgerton’ but Netflix’s latest blockbuster, 1899, is clearly a much darker beast. Telling the story of a ship full of immigrants en route to New York, the series has being described as a multilingual mystery/horror.

What that means in practice is anyone’s guess, however, given the streaming platform’s impressive recent record – we’ll happily stick our neck out and describe the series as one to watch.

Here’s everything you need to know about 1899:

What is the series about?

1899 follows a steamship full of European migrants heading towards America. Drawn from every corner of the continent, the group are nonetheless united by their hopes for the new century and their lives in the new world.

As they head west towards New York, however, the ship’s captain spies another ship adrift on the open sea.

“What they find on board will turn their passage to the promised land into a horrifying nightmare” says the official synopsis for the series.

What makes 1899 even more interesting, is that all of the (European) characters in the series will speak in their own mother tongues. Subtitles anyone?!

Who’s behind the camera on 1899?

The series was created by the creative team behind Netflix’s German hit series Dark, Friese and Baran Bo Odar. 1899 represents one part of the duo’s deal with the streaming platform.

“We don’t repeat ourselves, we really hate that, but it’s going to be a fun puzzle for the audience” the duo said about the new show. “We are going back to our mystery roots.  All the passengers on the ship are traveling with secrets that they don’t want to get out. It’s built like a puzzle again. Knowing that we did Dark, everyone can be assured that this is going to be something weird and wild and crazy.”
