Q at Colours, Hoxton

Thinking of catching American singer Q at Colours, Hoxton, then you'll need to read our preview of the up and coming artist first. Sophia Savage reports.

Rising star Q is in town this August for his first headline gig on UK soil at Colours, Hoxton. Recently signed to Columbia Records back in his native US, the artist (yes, his name really is Q, btw) seems poised for major label success with his affecting mix of acoustic soul and pop.

With tracks like the soaring Garage Rooftop and the lilting Take Me Where Your Heart Is, Q is fast making a name for himself in the music industry, especially in his homeland where the South Florida native has already racked up over 20 million streams of his first two singles!

Lyrically, the young singer is one of a number of young gen z artists who are addressing mental health, and in the process removing the stigma from mental health issues.

Q spent years battling anxiety himself and that struggle is evident in the lyrics to many of his best songs. “I used to want to feel anxious so I could let that control the music, and that tore me apart,” he recently told Vice magazine. Q’s first EP, The Shave Experiment, gives full voice to his feelings and emotions with many of the songs on the collection depicting men crying and showing their emotions.

“Crying is for everyone,” he says. “If I can cry and still be courageous and still be strong, I feel like that’s [being] more of a man, if anything. Let me cry, but I’ll still take care of what I gotta do. Those are your emotions. It’s a feeling and feelings aren’t always fact.”

And what about those Prince comparisons? Q will not be the first or last young black singer compared to the great, late Purple One yet, listening to the young artist’s songs, there really is something to it.

With Q Marsden’s background, it’s no wonder that he became a singer. His father is legendary reggae and dancehall producer Steven “Lenky” Marsden while his mother worked with everyone from Beenie Man and Bounty Killer. It’s no wonder then that Q wrote his first song at the tender age of five or that he had a major record deal at 21.

“I grew up in church, so my dad took me to his studio in Jamaica, and I made a song about how God was awesome,” he says of his earliest music experience. “I didn’t even write the song. I just went into the booth and started to say things.”

These days Marsden is more likely to be found in the high tech studio making his unique brand of acoustic soul. “To me, every song is soul because it’s coming from the heart.” he told Vibe while stating that his influences ran to everything from Micheal Jackson to Drake.

Q is at Colours, Hoxton on the 26th of August, 2021. More information about the gig can be found here.
