Rising star Beka is playing live at Colours, Hoxton in late October 2021. The Nottingham based singer, who enjoyed a hit earlier this year with her self penned single, I’ll Be There, will showcase a selection of material from her first EP (also called I’ll Be There) as well as several previously unreleased tracks.
With a sound that sits somewhere between Liv Dawson and Emily Burns, Beka’s uplifting soul and gospel infused songs are the perfect tonic for these challenging times, with I’ll Be There feeling like the audible equivalent of a warm hug, all sweet and puffy melodies, soulful vocals and winning harmonies.
Beka has dedicated the track to her husband, recounting to journalists how Mr Beka has supported the singer through thick and thin (including a recent bout of depression).
The song expresses Beka’s desire to return that loyalty. “It was a promise to say I see you…I see you during your highs…I see you during your lows…It’s about that human desire we all have for someone to show up for us when we need it most” says the singer of her big hit.
I’ll Be There has been warmly received on streaming platforms with the track gaining over 800,000 streams in the month after its release alone.
If there were any suspicion that the single was a fluke, however, Beka’s first EP has pretty much put an end to such doubts with its collection of catchy and tuneful pop soul.
Beka namechecks such legends as Quincy Jones, Stevie Wonder and Luther Vandross as influences and it is easy to hear the impact of such luminaries on the young singer’s music.
Beka, who lists her dream collaboration as Alicia Keys, toured with HONNE last year after appearing on the band’s last EP and the tracks Location Unknown and Crying Over You.
HONNE quickly returned the compliment on Beka’s next single, the emotive ‘More Than Friends’. A slow, groover, the track is another feelgood stab of what is quickly becoming Beka’s trademark pop/soul/gospel oeuvre.
And when asked what people should expect from her live shows, Beka says that she wants her gigs to feel like a really safe and inclusive space…with copious amounts of tea and Prosecco on tap!
“I’d love them to be the kind of show where you can ugly cry at and then dance like you would when you’re home, alone” she says of her ideal gig.
Beka will be at Colours, Hoxton on the 29th of October 2021. More information about the gig can be found here.
