With a score by Cole Porter, direction by Kathleen Marshall, and a cast including Robert Lindsay and ‘Hollywood Royalty’ Sutton Foster, there’s little doubt that this latest version of Anything Goes will be a hit.
The show, which features the classics ‘I Get A Kick Out Of You’ and ‘You’re The Top’, is due to open at the Barbican Theatre on the 23rd of July 2021 and advanced word of mouth is off the scale.
Some of that is no doubt due to the source material but we think just as much is down to the sheer star power involved in this latest version of the story.
Sutton Foster might not be a household name here yet, but the actress is an incredibly big deal in her native US, with a string of Tony Awards to her name.
Foster won a Tony Award for her role as Millie Dillmount in Thoroughly Modern Millie in 2011 and she has followed that up with yet another Tony for her role as Reno Sweeney in Anything Goes.
Between times, the star has appeared in a plethora of theatre roles, including Little Women, Young Frankenstein, Shrek the Musical, and Violet.
Robert Lindsay, for his part, has had an equally gilded career, with his TV successes (My Family, Citizen Smith) nicely balanced by his stage achievements. Up to 2022, the actor had won a BAFTA, a Tony Award, and two Olivier Awards for his theatre work.
The cast of Anything Goes is rounded out by the phenomenal duo of Felicity Kendal (The Good Life) and Gary Wilmot (Chicago). The pair are veterans of the stage and each has a wealth of musical credits to their name.
Anything Goes tells the story of lovelorn stockbroker, Billy Crocker. Realising that the girl of his dreams is working on a cruise ship, Crocker stows away in the hopes of winning her over.
The course of true love doesn’t run smooth, however, as Billy’s intended, Reno Sweeney (Foster) has just got engaged to wealthy Lord Evelyn Oakleigh.
The plot, to be fair, is not the main attraction of Anything Goes. Cole Porter’s score rightly steals the credits, with a host of memorable tunes including ‘I Get A Kick Out of You’, ‘You’re the Top’ and the show stopping ‘Anything Goes’.
With megawatt star power, a top notch director and incredible source material, Anything Goes seems set to be one of the musical highlights of 2022. So act now. Beg, borrow or steal to get tickets. Trust us, you won’t be dissapointed.
