Anything Goes

The SS American is ready to set sail again. Peter Gray reports on the return of Anything Goes.

After it’s phenomenally successful West End run came to an end last November, Anything Goes is ready to set sail once more with a new set of leads in the starring roles.

Robert Lindsay and ‘Hollywood Royalty’ Sutton Foster proved a more than worthy duo in the roles of Moonface Martin and Reno Sweeney last time out, however, the producers of the show have found an equally able duo to take up the mantle this time.

West End star Kerry Ellis will play Reno Sweeney in the production. Ellis, who has previously starred in Miss Saigon and Oliver, will take over the role previously played by Sutton Foster in the show.

Dennis Lawson, meanwhile, will step into the shows of the Moonface Martin character in the production. The Scottish Actor and Director is a familiar face on the small screen, where he is known for roles in such established series as New Tricks and Bleak House.

Rounding out the cast, Simon Callow will play Eli Whitney while the ever wonderful Bonnie Langford takes the role of Mrs Harcourt in the show.

Anything Goes has a score by Cole Porter, with direction by the legendary American producer Kathleen Marshall. The musical, which features the classics ‘I Get A Kick Out Of You’ and ‘You’re The Top’, is one of the most successful musicals in the history of Broadway.

The production tells the story of lovelorn stockbroker, Billy Crocker. Realising that the girl of his dreams is working on a cruise ship, Crocker stows away in the hopes of winning her over.

The course of true love doesn’t run smooth, however, as Billy’s intended, Reno Sweeney (Ellis) has just got engaged to wealthy Lord Evelyn Oakleigh.

The plot, to be fair, is not the main attraction of Anything Goes. Cole Porter’s score rightly steals the credits, with a host of memorable tunes including ‘I Get A Kick Out of You’, ‘You’re the Top’ and the show stopping ‘Anything Goes’.

With megawatt star power, a top notch director and incredible source material, Anything Goes seems set to be one of the musical highlights of 2022. So act now. Beg, borrow or steal to get tickets. Trust us, you won’t be disappointed.
