Chila Burman x Covent Garden

Watch Covent Garden glow up even more this autumn with an eyecatching new light installation from artist Chila Burman. Peter Gray reports.

The artist behind Tate Britain’s fabulous Diwali installation will be bringing her singular brand of genius to Covent Garden this autumn.

Chila Burman x Covent Garden will see the South Hall of the Market building transformed  into a neon lit wonderland with Burman once again taking inspiration from her Punjabi heritage.

Centred around a large neon sign reading “do you see words in rainbows”  the installation will also feature a distinctive floating neon octagon suspended from the centre of the Hall, as well as sculptures of peacocks, tigers and snakes and bulls illuminating the space.

To celebrate the arrival of Burman’s work, Covent Garden’s stores will be hosting their own celebrations of colour and creativity.

This will include a collaboration between Desenio and Avobar, a limited edition cocktail collection at Balthazar, and an array of workshops on creativity  at the Alkemistry on Floral Street.

The popular Avobar will play host to a selection of Desenio prints this September. The prints will not be there just to be admired, however – if any take your fancy just scan the adjacent QR code to shop and you’ll get 10% off.

Balthazar will be celebrating Joie De Vivre with a selection of limited edition cocktails. Created in collaboration with Grey Goose Vodka and St Germain Elderflower Liqueur., the cocktails will bring a touch of French sophistication to Covent Garden.

Alkemistry, meanwhile, will be offering visitors to Covent Garden a selection of workshops focused on creativity and colour.

The first will be entitled ‘La Maison de la Magicienne’ – The House of Female Magic’ and will see the inside of the Floral Street store transformed  with ‘a Magical bohemian inspired installation’ for activities including Tarot reading .

The second workshop will focus on the ‘Colour of Creativity’ and feature Kumachi and Cinta bracelet making.

So, it looks likes it’s going to be an exciting month in London’s favourite piazza.

Chila Burman x Covent Garden will be at the South Hall, Covent Garden until the end of October 2021. More information about the exhibit can be found here.
