“For the third year, we’ve brought together exciting and innovative designers and growers from across the country to transform this magical house into a floral extravaganza” explains Twickenham-based floral designer Leigh Chappell, who co-organises the Festival with flower photographer, Jane Ford.

“They may grow their own flowers; work with local flower farmers or be cutting back and eliminating single-use plastics in their work” adds Chappell.

Florists included in this year’s event include Simply by Arrangement, Wolves Lane Flower Company, Xyris Botanicals and Tallulah Rose Flower School, alongside a new generation of designers, including Ravens Hill Flower Farm, A Glimpse of the Garden and Johnny Crows Garden.

A flower clinic with Strawberry Hill’s horticultural experts, demonstrations of sustainable methods of flower arranging and a series of children’s workshops are among the highlights of the event, which will also showcase the work of the artist Flora Roberts.

Renowned for her murals and large-scale paintings for private houses and commercial projects, Roberts is also a highly sought-after fabric and wallpaper designer, creating beautiful floral patterns for companies such as Hamilton Weston Ltd, Zoffany and Mulberry Home.

A series of guided tours of the house and a talk by the author of the Flower Hunter book, Lucy Hunter, will complete the line-up of events at the much loved festival. Hunter will be at Strawberry Hill on Friday the 8th of October for the event, which is entitled ‘Making the Ordinary Extraordinary: Reimagining the Boquet’.

Strawberry Hill is one of the finest examples of Georgian domestic architecture in the UK and has been credited with kick starting the Gothic Revival in the 18th century.

The house was the brainchild of Horace Walpole, the third son of Prime Minister Sir Robert Walpole. A pivotal figure in 18th-century society, literature, art and architecture, the younger Walpole was also noted for his impeccable taste, which he cultivated on a Grand Tour of Europe between 1739-41. Many of the influences he absorbed on this journey were to find expression at his house in Strawberry Hill.

The gardens at Strawberry Hill are also worth a look. They are among the first in England to employ the English naturalistic style, which would grace such esteemed estates as those at Chiswick and Stowe.

Walpole was a passionate advocate of the naturalistic style and his essay on garden design is one of the most influential in the history of English gardening.

BBC radio and television presenter and Patron of Strawberry Hill House Alan Titchmarsh had this to say about this year’s flower festival: “Part interior design exhibition and part art installation, Strawberry Hill’s Flower Festival is a wonderful demonstration of the sheer artistry that exists here in the UK and the incredible variety, versatility and, of course, beauty of our domestic flowers and plants.

The Flower Festival is a unique opportunity to be inspired and learn how you too can transform your home and garden into a place of wonder.”
