The Night Tube to reopen

The Victoria and Central lines will return in November. Peter Gray reports

Following an outcry by Londoners, Transport for London have announced that the Night Tube is to reopen next month on several lines.

The service was suspended in March 2020 at the beginning of the first lockdown but following an internal review, TfL have announced that the Night Tube will begin a phased return from next month.

The first phase will see the Central and Victoria lines return, with the duo set to relaunch on the 27th of November 2021, just in time for the busy and lucrative Christmas party season.

TfL have also pledged to relaunch the Jubilee, Northern and Piccadilly line Night Tube services ‘as soon as possible’ with the organisation now focusing on training new Tube drivers in preparation for the relaunch.

The move comes at a time of heightened concerns about safety in London with the deaths of Sarah Everard and Sabina Nessa still dominating the news.

Transport for London addressed these concerns in a press release about the reopening, saying that it would ‘provide a safe, quick travel option for Londoners and visitors looking to make the most of all the capital has to offer in the evenings, and those who need to travel to or from work at night.’

News of the relaunch was also welcomed by London’s bars, club and restaurant owners with the restoration of the Night Tube set to enable Londoners to enjoy the city’s nightlife in the run up to Christmas without the fear of finding themselves stranded in Central London.

‘The reason I was so keen to be the first mayor in London’s history to start the Night Tube in 2016 and to restart it now, after the Covid pause, is because I know how important this is to London’s thriving night-time economy, to London’s recovery and to the confidence and safety of everyone travelling home at night, particularly women and girls,’ said Mayor of London Sadiq Khan said in a statement.

‘That’s why I’m delighted to see the return of the Victoria and Central Night Tube lines next month, which will make a huge difference to people travelling around our city at night and making their way home, offering them an additional safe, reliable transport option. I will continue to work with TfL and the government to do everything we can to bring back the full Night Tube network as soon as possible.’
