The Dread & Breakfast Hotel

Crank calls, unexpected visitors and strange noises in the night mark the D&B down as London's spookiest hotel. Peter Gray reports.

It’s safe to say that the Dread & Breakfast is not your run of the mill hotel. While other establishments boast about the quality of sleep guests can expect in their rooms, the D&B instead warns prospect visitors that they may not sleep at all!

No, 10 Lancaster Gate is certainly not the place to go if you want a good night’s sleep. Crank calls, uninvited guests and blood-curdling screams see to that. But Halloween at the hotel is something else again with the spirits of the dead only too ready to party!

So when the Kraken Hotel announced that it was opening its creeking doors to overnight guests this October, city:countdown was intrigued. The hotel will be open from the 28th to the 30th of October 2021 with a limited amount of overnight stays permitted each night.

Instead of sleeping, however, would be guests will be assisting the Kraken Hunter as he continues his neverending quest to find the Beast. Your job will be to help establish the beast’s last known whereabouts – even if that means putting yourself through a heart-stopping evening of close encounters of the dead at London’s most creepy hotel.

10 Lancaster Square

The building has a long and troubled history. Said to be infested with the ‘restless and malevolent’ souls of mariners who survived an ocean encounter with the Kraken,  the men were so scarred by their experience that it was said that they subsequently turned into the very embodiment of evil.

Captured by the authorities on their return to dry land, the seamen were incarcerated in a sad and lonely looking building in Central London. Up until that point,  10 Lancaster Gate had been a boarding house for the down on their luck, criminal or insane, but from that moment on, the building would be forever associated with the evil seamen. Blood curdling screams were a regular occurence at night and many who entered the building never came out again!

As you have probably guessed by now, The Dread & Breakfast is not a proper hotel but rather an elaborate Halloween pop up, brought to us by the Kraken Rum team. The Dread & Breakfast hotel forms the centrepiece of the rum brand’s annual ‘Screamfest’ event, which is now in its fifth year.

For this year’s event, the company have assembled a crack team of actors, light and sound technicians, special effects whizzes and theatre pros to give hotel guests a suitably good scare.

Before you start packing an overnight bag, however, you should know that only a few ‘lucky’ participants will be ‘chosen’ to spend a night at the D&B. And those who are lucky enough to be chosen to stay there will not know that they have been chosen until the night of the stay itself.

140 people will be invited to visit the venue each night for an evening of Kraken cocktails and music – courtesy of the D&B’s house band, Thankful We Are Dead.

Visitors will then be given a chance to explore the hotel’s ‘accursed corridors and revenant-filled rooms’ and those who are deemed to have what it takes to brave prolonged encounters with poltergeists will be invited to spend the night at the hotel (so all visitors are advised to bring along an overnight bag).

The Kraken Hunter

The chosen few will join the legendary Kraken Hunter as he continues his never ending search for the Beast.  Believing that communion with the spectres will help him track down the Kraken on the high seas, he has made his way to the hotel and he needs your help! So, are you brave enough to spend a night in the sleepless hotel?!

The Dread & Breakfast Hotel is at 10 Lancaster Gate, London. The venue will be open for three sleepless nights from the 28th to the 30th of October 2021. All those bidding for an overnight stay can enter from 7pm until 11pm. Each ticket to visit the hotel will cost £10 and includes one free Kraken cocktail. Chosen residents will go to their rooms at 11pm and will check-out with their bags (both for clothes and under their eyes) and frayed nerves at 9am the following morning.
