Tiptoeing – Hope Tala

Bossa nova rhythms, Latin guitars and a very British sensibility underpin Hope Tala's Single Of The Week Tiptoeing. Peter Gray reports.

Tipped for big things by just about everyone, Hope Tala this week offered the clearest indication yet of why she is so highly regarded with her new single, Tiptoeing.

Produced by Greg Kristin of Adele ‘Easy On Me’ fame, the track certainly has the right pedigree. This is no sentimental, Adele style ballad, however, but a playful, exuberant and rousing crowd pleaser.

Tiptoeing is built around a gentle bossa nova rhythm, with prominent piano chords and gentle, strumming Latin guitars adding to the effect. It’s Tala’s vocal that really makes the song so special, however.  Tiptoeing’s musical influences may come from the far flung corners of the globe but there is something very British and almost Lily Allen-ish about the West Londoner’s vocal on the song, and this only serves to make the track more charming.

“’Tiptoeing is about the dance we do when we’re at the threshold of romance” says Tala of the song. “It’s about treading carefully when you’re not quite sure what the other person is feeling, but desperately wanting to take a risk because you’re young and life is short.”

Tala may not be certain of what her fictitious lover thinks of her, but the artist can surely make no such claim about her audience or critics.

The singer has been showered in critical and popular acclaim over the last 18 months with several critics tipping the artist for big things in the future. Indeed, Tala has has even come to the attention of the 44th President of the United States, Barack Obama!

Each year the President publishes a list of his favourite releases (films, music and books), and amongst this year’s musical choices, alongside such distinguished artists as Beyonce and Dua Lipa, was Tala with her single All My Girls Like To Fight. The song, which comes from the singer’s Girl Eats Sun EP, is a gorgeous Latin number complete with Latin guitars and lush strings.

Hope Tala is an artist on the rise and her new single Tiptoeing is the perfect demonstration of her incredible talents. With its playful Latin rhythms, cool vocals and joyous feel, Tiptoeing is a worth winner of our Single Of The Week accolade.
