A brand new production of Grease is set to open at the Dominion Theatre in early May 2022. Grease the Musical will feature all new staging and choreography while remaining true to the original script and score by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey.
The new production will be directed by Nikolai Foster whose previous credits include Andrew Lloyd Webber’s critically acclaimed Sunset Boulevard, West Side Story and Hanif Kureishi’s My Beautiful Laundrette.
Choreography on the show will be overseen by legendary choreographer Arlene Philips who came to prominence as a and whose theatre credits include the Wizard of Oz, The Sound of Music, Starlight Express and We Will Rock You.
Colin Ingrams will handle production chores on the new show, while Sarah Travis will oversee orchestrations and musical supervision and Ben Cracknell will be in charge of lighting design while Tom Marshall and Richard Brooker will oversee sound design.
“This is the first new production of Grease in the West End for 29 years, so we are excited to be bringing this grittier version to the Dominion Theatre. All the familiar songs from the film are included, plus some of the songs and script from the very first production which will be new to audiences. Directed by the brilliant Nikolai Foster and choreographed by the legendary Arlene Phillips, they have done an incredible job of reimagining one of the most popular musicals of all time, to make it feel fresh, entertaining, and celebratory – something we all need right now” says Ingrams of the new production.
Although the musical opened in 1971, it was not until 1978 that the story would achieve worldwide fame thanks to Randal Kleiser’s move adaptation of the story.
With John Travolta and Olivia Newton John in the roles of Danny Zuko and Sandy, Grease was a worldwide smash, making massive stars of its two leads and popularising a string of songs from the movie, including You’re The One That I Want, Greased Lightnin’ and Hopelessly Devoted To You.
The film would go on to become the fourth highest-grossing live action musical of all time while You’re The One That I Want spending a then unheard of nine weeks at the top of the singles charts in the UK.
Interestingly, the stage production of the musical also proved a fertile ground for the blooding of Hollywood movie stars with many now established Hollywood stars cutting their teeth on the production including such household names as Patrick Swayze, John Travolta, and Richard Gere.
GREASE will be at the Dominion Theatre from the 10th of May 2022 (previews from the 3rd of May 2022) until the 29th of October 2022. More information about the show can be found here.
