The Osmonds Musical

The Osmonds Musical will trace the amazing story of seven siblings from Utah who went on to conquer the world of pop. Peter Gray reports.

Recent years have given us musicals about the Jacksons, the Supremes and even ABBA, so it’s little surprise that the theatre world has now turned to those crazy horses themselves, The Osmonds, for the next big musical extravaganza.

The Osmonds – A New Musical will tell the story of Wayne, Alan, Merrill, Jay, Marie, Jimmy, and off course Donny, tracing the band’s rise from their early days in Utah to the heady days of worldwide fame and adulation.

“From their star residency on The Andy Williams Show from 1962 to 1969, to pop stars and ‘Osmondmania’ from 1971 to 1975, to the arrival of The Donny & Marie Show, a popular variety TV show, from 1976 to 1979, The Osmonds lived a remarkable life recording chart-topping albums, selling out vast arena concerts and making record-breaking TV shows – until one bad decision cost them everything” says a press release for the forthcoming musical.

They may have faded from public perception in recent years but it is easy to forget just how massive the band were back in the day. A direct rival of Micheal Jackson and The Jacksons, the group amassed a phenomenal one hundred million record sales over the course of their career coupled with a truly mind-blowing 59 Gold & Platinum awards.

Their list of hits is in many ways the soundtrack to the seventies with such iconic tracks as One Bad Apple, Down by the Lazy River, Crazy Horses, Let Me In, Love Me for a Reason, (We’re) Having a Party, Puppy Love and Long Haired Lover From Liverpool.

Based on a story by Jay Osmond and book by Julian Bigg and Shaun Kerrison, The Osmond’s – A New Musical will be directed by Shaun Kerrison with musical direction by Will Joy.

Choreography and musical staging on the show will be undertaken by Bill Deamer while Lucy Osborne will oversee set & costume design.

Julian Bigg and Rich Morris will handle musical supervision and arrangements for the show while Ben Cracknell and Dan Samson will oversee lighting design and sound design, respectively.

With regards to the acting, the plum roles of Marie, Jay and Donny Osmond have gone to Georgia Lennon, Alex Lodge and Joseph Peacock, respectively.

Although Lennon graduated from Laine Theatre Arts in 2020, the actress has a wealth of theatre experience to her name, having appeared as Lady Chatterley in Lady Chatterley’s Lover (Shaftesbury Theatre), Belle in Beauty and the Beast (Grand Opera House, Belfast) and Princess Apricot in Jack and the Beanstalk (Grand Opera House, Belfast).

Alex Lodge is another young actor with a surprisingly full CV. The star, who will play Jay Osmond in the production, previously appeared in Dick Whittington at Royal & Derngate’s Theatre, A Wonderful Town at Opera Holland Park and A Midsummer Night’s Dream at Theatre on the Lawn. Londoner Lodge has also appeared in West End’s A Christmas Carol and the phenomenally successful Book of Mormon.

However, it is baby faced Joseph Peacock who has grabbed the most coveted role in the new musical. Heartthrob Donny Osmond was very much the star of the group and for much of his career a Mormon version of Michael Jackson. The role will give Peacock a chance to further the experience he gained in musicals such as Sting’s The Last Ship and Bat Out of Hell. The actor is also a star of the small screen having appeared in such TV staples as Holby City and Casualty.

The Osmonds – A New Musical is the brainchild of the baby of the family, Jay Osmond. The instigator of many of the projects that kept the family together in latter years, Jay Osmond was the youngest of the Osmond children and the last of the siblings to enter the band.

Finding that he had a natural talent for choreography, baby faced Jay quickly became the official Osmond choreographer, having a major hand in arranging the dance moves for the siblings many tours and live shows.

As well as his work as a choreographer for the band, the youngest Osmond sibling often found himself producing the group’s TV shows, amassing production credits on such iconic programmes as The Donny & Marie Show and The Osmond Family Hour.

The Osmonds – A New Musical will begin a tour of the UK & Ireland in February 2022 at Curve, Leicester, with the show coming to London in for five nights at the New Wimbledon Theatre.
